A stump in the middle of the yard is more than ugly. It blocks the mower, it trips kids and grandparents, and it keeps sending up sucker shoots from the roots all summer. You probably planned to deal with it last year. We can take care of it this week. Our North Canton tree service grinds stumps as a stand-alone job or as a bundle with the original tree removal.
Pricing is by diameter at ground level. $249 up to 12 inches. $299 up to 20 inches. $349 up to 25 inches. $399 for 26 inches and up. No mystery fees.
Signs You Need Stump Grinding
If you are mowing around a stump every week, that is the sign. If you see new shoots coming up around it each spring, that is the sign. If the stump is starting to rot, attracting carpenter ants or termites near the house, that is a bigger sign. Soft, rotting stumps are food and shelter for pests that you do not want anywhere close to your foundation.
Waiting tends to make the spot worse, not better. Rot pulls in insects. Roots keep suckering. The hole around a decaying stump can sink and become a real trip hazard. If you want to plant grass, sod, a flower bed, or another tree in that spot, the stump has to come out first. Grinding is the cleanest way to do it.
Our Stump Grinding Options
Most jobs are straight grinding. We bring the grinder to the stump, set up wheel pads on the lawn so we do not rut it up, and grind 6 to 8 inches below grade. That is enough for grass to take. If you are planting a new tree in the same place, we grind deeper, usually 12 inches, so the new root ball has clean soil. If the stump came from a recent removal you did with us, ask about the bundle pricing on Tree Removal with grinding.
After grinding, the hole is full of wood chips and soil. For most lawns we level the grindings in and the spot blends in over a season. If you want a clean, plantable patch right away, we add Topsoil & Fill Dirt Delivery and finish with Yard Grading & Leveling so the spot is flat and seedable on day one. If the plan is to put a new tree back in, we line up Tree & Shrub Planting for the same week.
Stump Grinding for North Canton Homes
North Canton has a lot of mature ash, silver maple, and pin oak stumps left from removals across Stark, Summit, Medina, Wayne, Portage, Tuscarawas, and Mahoning counties. Canton, Akron, Massillon, Wooster, and Cuyahoga Falls neighborhoods all see the same pattern: a tree comes down for safety, and the stump sits there for years.
Local soil also matters. A lot of Northeast Ohio yards have heavy clay. Clay holds water around an old stump and speeds up rot, which is one more reason not to leave it. We work in clay every day and we know how to set up so we do not tear the lawn.
